How to Redact a PDF Permanently

Remove sensitive content instead of merely drawing a black rectangle over it.

Covering is not redaction

A shape placed above text can leave the underlying text searchable, selectable, or recoverable when objects are moved. Permanent redaction must remove the source content and sanitize related information.

Use a controlled workflow

Mark every sensitive region, apply redactions, then save to a new file. Remove hidden layers, comments, attachments, form values, document metadata, and incremental revisions when they may contain the same information.

  • Work from a copy
  • Search for every spelling and identifier
  • Inspect headers, footers, bookmarks, and attachments

Test like a recipient

Try selecting and copying across each redacted area, search for removed phrases, inspect document properties, and reopen the file in another viewer. For high-risk disclosure, use a documented review by a second person.
